Refining an Antwerp townhouse: am designs x SUMUM

When restoring a historic property, the difference between a standard renovation and an architectural design often lies in the smallest details. In a striking Antwerp townhouse project, am designs proved that modern minimalism is not about stripping everything away. Instead, it is about choosing exactly what remains with absolute intention.

This philosophy directly extends to the architectural hardware. Rather than treating light switches and electrical sockets as technical necessities, am designs integrated them as deliberate, defining design elements. By partnering with SUMUM, the architects transformed a functional requirement into an visual statement.

Moving beyond the afterthought

In premium interior architecture, utility can easily clash with aesthetic vision. Traditional switches often disrupt the clean lines of a meticulously plastered wall, breaking the visual flow of a room. am designs approaches this universal design challenge differently.

In this Antwerp townhouse, the goal was to create an atmosphere of quiet, unpretentious luxury. To achieve this, the hardware needed to do more than simply operate the lights. It had to complement the serene, minimalist environment. By viewing the switch as a piece of micro-architecture, am designs ensured no detail was left to chance.

Designed for seamless living

The success of this specific interior relies on uninterrupted surfaces. To preserve the pure geometry of the rooms and the elegant proportions of the townhouse, am designs selected the SUMUM CORE Round series for all switches and sockets .

The CORE Round design offers a soft, organic shape. This round design gently contrasts with the rigid, structured architectural lines of the historic townhouse, bringing a sense of balance and calm to the living spaces.

Warmth in the details: the brushed brass finish

Minimalism can easily feel cold or sterile if it is not balanced with the right textures and materials. To introduce warmth and distinct character into the Antwerp townhouse, the design team specified a beautiful Brushed Brass finish for all the SUMUM hardware .

This deliberate material choice serves as a sophisticated accent against the muted, neutral palette of the interior walls. Brushed Brass catches the natural light beautifully, providing a gentle, shifting glow that changes throughout the day.
